Description
The color is mostly brown or fawn and has faint black spots or stripes. The skin is usually brown or light brown with gray and yellow spots on the limbs. The tip of the huge head has black markings and the chin has a pair of tentacles. The sides of the head and throat are streaked with yellowish, black, and coffee-colored and interlocking stripes. Juveniles are very similar to adults in their pattern, except that juveniles have a distinct vertebrae in the middle of the dorsal armor. The Tiger Muskie is a turtle that prefers and walks on the bottom of riverbeds, rarely basks in the sun, and can stay underwater for long periods of time because it has the ability to change its breath underwater and breathe, which is accomplished through small organs in its mouth, nose and throat.
