Description
Dorsal armor olive to dark brown, smooth, usually flattened; shield with black margins, yellow mud turtle margins. The 9th and 10th marginal shields are elevated (querulous in young individuals). Ventral carapace yellow to brown, black along joints, double hinged joints, 11 shields. Jaws and eyes white or yellow, often also spotted. The male ventral armor is concave, the tail is thick and long, and the inner hind legs are dotted with rough scales. The juvenile dorsal armor has a black spot on the posterior margin of each shield.
