Description
The head and limbs are gray and covered with spots; the dorsal carapace is furrowed, and the plastron is orange or gray-green with black patches on it, with great variation in color from subspecies to subspecies. There are seven subspecies of diamondback turtles, and there may be great differences in dorsal carapace pattern, skin color, markings, and shape between individuals, making them even more varied and attractive. The shell color is brown to gray, and the body color can be gray, brown, yellow, or white. All Diamondbacks have a unique pattern on their carapace and head, and the only common feature is their striated, concentrically patterned (diamond pattern), diamond-shaped shield. In addition, another external feature of diamondback turtles is their hermaphroditic heteromorphism.
